Watch These First Graders on the iPads

Speaking about literacy skills, watch how these first graders engage in a poetry workshop and how the teacher organizes it. What's your take on this kind of workshop? How are you feeling about iPad integration into the lower grades? Do you see them as valuable tools for promoting students' literacy skills?

  1. Wow! What a great way to integrate technology into the primary classroom! It's a great alternative to the drawing and erasing with paper/pencil, which aalways takes forever! I also LOVED how the students were able to choose which medium they wanted to work with. I bet it's great for engagement too!

  2. This is amazing! We teach this poem with our first graders, and I never would have thought to use ipads for visualization in this way. I have used ipads in my kindergarten and first grade classroom during small group instruction, however it is so clear to me that there are so many more things I could be using them for in my classroom. I am eager to learn!

  3. This video was amazing! I think my first grade students would love this! I thought it was cool how the teacher was reading a poem and the students were inferring what the author was saying (which is so hard for first grade!) It is a way to differentiate in the classroom and involve all of your students. I also like how when they went to their seats, they had a choice of whether they wanted to continue to use the ipads or use paper and markers.

  4. I found this to be interesting and a step into the technology direction. I am concerned with the focusing aspect as they listen to the poem and draw on the I-pad at the same time. I wonder if the long term benefit will be on the skill or the drawing. I can see this working well with students who are a little older than first-graders. It would be nice to see how well the students grasp this skill in a future post.

  5. OK this is insane! Yet I love it! I would love to use IPADS in my classroom like this! Who would think that even in 1st grade these students would do so well with this! I truly now believe that integrating technology is VERY beneficial!

  6. I did not bring my headphones to class tonight but I can't wait to go home and watch this video! As a first grade teacher I think using iPADs with the kids is an amazing way to integrate technology into literacy!

  7. I think it's safe to say that watching those kiddos at work brightened my day! What an incredible minilesson to kick off Writer's Workshop, secure the students' attention, and set an authentic purpose for learning! Was anyone else impressed by how seamlessly each child took a screenshot of his/her work and emailed it off to the teacher with the touch of a few buttons? I couldn't help but envision how iPads might reduce my paper clutter....Sounds like EverNote would be the perfect companion to aid in document/ assessment management.

I'm also seeing possibilities with Flickr...Richardson (2010) spoke to creating visual stories using photography and poetry. Flickr opens up a whole new world of collaborating, publishing, and connecting!

  8. After watching this I am completely inspired to use iPADs as tools in my upcoming poetry unit with my own 1st graders. I agree with Andrea that the students use of technology in this mini lesson was seamless. The idea of having my students email me and collecting their work digitally is so exciting! I would love to track their progress in writing throughout the school year on a digital portfolio like this.

Seeing that many kids are visual learners (as well as myself) I see the use of photography and poetry that Richardson mentions in his book (2010) as a wonderful tool to extend learning and teach with the multiple intelligences in mind.

  9. iPads have truly changed the way so much is done in classrooms these days. Starting at such early ages, teachers are able to integrate technology in the classroom, something that is becoming more and more natural to young learners. Although there may be factors at fault with the use of technology in classrooms, the benefits of student growth outweigh any negatives. With their durability, iPads have provided many learners with new opportunities to discover new and exciting ways to learn.

  10. What a great mini-lesson. This teacher has clearly showed the expectations and demonstrated the different ways to publish work. I would love to see her introduce writers workshop with and without the technology at the beginning of the year.
