Bio Poems

Bio Poems enable students to introduce themselves in a creative way. Check this website posting for some samples: "Bio Poems, Created and Composed by Div. 2." Use the Play button to scroll and see each sample.

Mr. Kaliar is the teacher, and on his website, Our Learning Journeys, look for the tab, Student Showcase" to find examples of other student projects.

Here are two examples of the students' Bio Poems.

After looking through more examples of the Bio Poems, what do you think of this class project? Have you tried similar projects? If you looked through samples of other students' projects on the class site, what do you think of theses? How do you feel about teachers publishing student work on websites or blogs?

  1. In my first grade classroom we do a unit on poetry. The students write various types of poems, including color poems, shape poems, pictures poems and five senses poems. The Bio Poem reminded me of one of the poems we write in first grade called an I Am Poem. The words are very similar, for example I wonder..., I dream..., I pretend..., I worry... and I want.. It has always been one of my favorite poems because the students are very honest with their responses. The poem truly paints a picture of each student and many parents have framed the poem. I like some of the sentence starters from the Bio Poems and it has given me some new ideas for our poems in the future!

Bio-Poems are a great way for students to express themselves and share with others what they are or are not interested in. I like how students are able to write words to describe themselves without prompting. I also like the other model where students respond to prompts: who I admire, inspire, likes, etc. I will definitely use this with my first grade class!

  3. Judy, I'm just about to kick-off a poetry unit and "Bio Poems" may be the perfect introduction for my third graders! Too often the kiddos only associate poetry with rhyming, so this format may be exactly what they need to energize their creative juices and demonstrate some personal reflection! I'll let you know how it turns out :)
