Excellent Wiki to Find Information on Digital Storytelling

The wiki, 50+ Web 2.0 Ways Tell a Story is an excellent place to learn about storytelling: 1) the purpose, 2) process, and 3) tools. Spend some time exploring the site.

Below is a video from the site that reviews the concept of digital storytelling.

Once you have watched the video and explored around the wiki website, be sure to return to this blog post and comment upon what you discovered and can share with others.

  1. This was, hands down, the most helpful site regarding digital storytelling! Everything was so clear and I will certainly use it as a helpful tool in creating my own.

    1. @Megan Glad you found it useful. The volume of information about digital storytelling available online is immense. Perhaps, you will be inspired to create your own wiki to curator the information you find online.

  2. Wow! Digital Storytelling seems pretty fancy! I actually never heard of Digital Storytelling until now. The ways to use D.S. seem endless (especially all the tools). It seems to be a useful tool to use in the classroom. This video explained the basic information of D.S and more in a clear manner. Like Megan said above, I will definitely be referring back to this video when I create my own!

  3. I have seen digital storytelling done before using both student work and photographs. It is a great way end of the year "gift" to send home a DVD copy of the class's story with each student. It is a great tool that students get excited about and parents love to see them as well. These sites are helpful resources to get started.

  4. I have heard of Digital Storytelling in EDUC 536 and thought it was a great way for students to show their understanding through another outlet! I also thought that the way the site explained how to find media for your story was very useful and something every teacher should talk about. Many students think they can just pull a picture from Google Images and copy/paste. Everything you use comes from someplace else and should be documented! Great convo to have with adolescents as part of digital citizenship...

  5. Digital storytelling seems like a great tool to utilize in my classroom. I've used Kerpoof before and my students love the animated aspect of writing stories. They get to choose their story elements and be as creative as they want. I enjoyed the 50 Dominoes demonstration of Storytelling using one story with 50+ tools. Just love his Spots! I will also be revisiting this site as a resource.

  6. Digital StoryTelling is new to me. I will have fun exploring how to incorporate this in my lessons. One thing is for sure I will take many more pictures. I like the idea of adding another tool for students to be creative and show their individuality. I am inspired!

  7. This is my first real introduction to digital storytelling. The video above was really cute, and uses digital storytelling to explain what it's all about. I like how students can use a variety of technologies to pull everything together for one presentation. This will be very exciting to explore this semester!

  8. Years ago I wrote a script for a workshop, which I later turned into an online course for a certificate program, called, "The Power of Narrative." It was all about using storytelling to teach children. The new advances in technology, such as Digital Storytelling, have come such a long way that it makes my old workshop seem like reading by candle light before the invention of electricity!

  9. I really liked how this video highlighted the importance of digital storytelling by mentioning its benefits and purpose. This is a wonderful guide for teachers who have never used digital storytelling. I have used some digital story programs but am eager to try new ones shown in the video. As I was watching I wrote down as many of them as I could. I have used Kerpoof, StoryBird, Animoto, and have recently started to explore Xtranormal and iMovie. Make Beliefs Comix is also a tool I have used. It is a great creative way to get students to be storytellers and write in the form of a comic. My first grade boys really enjoy sharing their stories together through the comics. This program is fun and easy to use! I will defiantly be checking back to this site regularly as it offers wonderful tools. I will also be sharing many of these resources with colleagues in my school, especially the third grade teachers who are always using digital storytelling with their students. I am looking forward to using these new digital storytelling tools with my students!

  10. I agree with the idea that digital storytelling allows teachers to present information in ways that are not usually possible. I understand why this is a tool that is “the foundation for all effective and persuasive communication”. That immediately gave me the idea of students using digital storytelling to complete a persuasive assignment. I feel this tool would appeal to students, especially those who already get excited about using PowerPoint, since it allows them to create a video with videos, text and music incorporated within it.

  11. Once again, I feel overwhelmed with the amount of resources available out there! With that said, I can't wait to explore a few of them and find what will meet my and my students needs to write digital story. Thanks for an excellent place to get started in exploring the world of digital storytelling! With this wiki as a tool I will have no problem having my students be creative, innovative, and collaborative thinkers and creaters within the 21st century world!

  12. Digital storytelling is more about the craft of telling stories not the tools. However, I learned that using the tools can improve motivation, persuade, inspire, and make the story stand out. The amount of available sites and options for these sites are vast. I think that as educators it would be beneficial to use some professional development time to expose us to even a small amount of options that are available to us. As I read through the list of tools used just to make this video, I was drawn to experiment with the tools on the list. I will be exploring the options used more carefully. I am finding that it is very easy to get pulled in different directions when trying to decide what tools would be the most useful and effective. I would love to take some time with my students and explore the various options with them. My after school club may be a good group to start with since it would not affect class time. I have encouraged them to bring in some of the stories they have already written so we can add the technology and have some fun with it. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fit this into a 57 minute class period?

  13. "The story is more important than the tool used" I will need to repeat that to myself over and over! Just like Kelly said, it IS overwhemling to have so many options at our fingertips. I think another important point I took away from the video is that I need to devote time to practice and interact with the different tools available to see which one suits my needs (and my students needs) for creating a digical story. Mary Ellen, I am wondering the same thing...how will I fit this in?? It is definitely a project that will motivate and inspire students to share their learning or own stories but when? (I am reminded of Kim...if it is not tested we do not teach it...) Maybe next year a realistic goal would be to have students make one or possibily two a year and fit in on the last Friday of the month or something. An after school club seems like an ideal way to share it with students.

    1. I like the idea about of planning a couple a year. Since I have to work around the regular ed teachers' schedule I think your idea would be a realistic way to get things off the ground. Thanks!

  14. There is so much that I have been able to take away from all of the resources that we have been introduced to so far, but one of my questions as of last week was how will I find the opportunities to use this technology and what should I concentrate on when using it. With resources like these it certainly has helped me to understand that you can do just about anything when it comes to digital storytelling. I liked the ideas given on how to get started and how to go about organizing ideas. It was also interesting to see how he told the same story using numerous tools. I'm realizing that I'm not the only one that is struggling to come up with ways to incorporate these wonderful elements of technology into my resource room, hopefully together we can come up with some creative ideas.

    1. Darcie, you just need a few tools for now. Most of all, keep your students in mind. Given their literacy skills, you might focus on the design of instructional materials appropriate to their needs. For some of your students, creating with these tools might be difficult, but they can interact with what you create. Does that make sense?

    2. You are in good company with others like myself who are wondering how to incorporate all of these resources. With sp ed students, we always struggle with new tools since not only is the use of the resource new to them but the skills. I was thinking that it might be helpful if a couple of resources were used to teach the same lesson. That way the skills would be reinforced in various ways. I feel the more we create with or for our students the bigger our "library" will become but it will definitely take time and be a project that is ongoing.

  15. Digital Storytelling is an effective way to communicate to others whether it be to entertain, persude, or info. There are many tools that can be used in combination to create your masterpiece. I can see how a storyboard template is essential in the process. You have to know your path. Your project can start heading in many directions. I find this project is a great way for us teachers to learn about the process and the toolsused in designing a digital story before we go ahead and hand over the information and the tools for our students to use. Incorporating different medias into a single project is amazing!

  16. After watching the video I had many thoughts rushing through my head. 1, Using DS is a great way to learn using so many learning styles it's like Gardner's Multiple Intelligences-technology version. 2, Some many tools which one is right for me? 3, in order to use these tools one must practice, practice, practice. There is not enough time in the day! I am overwhelmed by the information there is and I want to jump in with both feet. However, I am not one to start something and leave it, so how do I pick and choose to be sure I can finish, then remember how to do it all so I can go back to exploring this summer and continue to use it in my classroom next year.

  17. Wow, very overwhelming at first when I opened the page. There were so many hyperlinks that it was hard to stay focused on one thing at a time. All I wanted to do is click on each hyperlink and then I would forget where I left off. I don't know if others felt like this. Digital storytelling is a great way for students to be able to share a story. It does not have to be an elaborate story, it can be simple. However when using it in the classroom, it is nice to have a certain criteria for students to use. This way it will help guide the students. When playing with the different tools he shares with us, I found it very important to have a story board ready before hand, especially if you are going to add audio to use digital story. What great tools he offers and I would love to explore them all. Unfortunately I was not able to all at once but hope to come back to it one day. As the video says "the tools are shiny and cool but it is about the craft of telling stories." The creativity and possibilities of telling the stories is amazing.

  18. Similarly to what others have posted, I am absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of resources available to use in education... yet excited to try them out one by one. This video was great by showing the same exact story in several different formats. As the others said, the point that "The story is more important than the tool used" will definitely be the biggest help for me to realize that content counts and not to become hung up on the technology.
